Researchers have pinpointed the Zavaritskii volcano on Simushir Island, part of the disputed Kuril Islands, as the source of a massive eruption nearly 200 years ago. The eruption released significant amounts of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, lowering the annual average temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere by 1°C and affecting the global climate.
